How memory works in Cara AI Chat

Characters remember details from your chats, so a conversation picks up where you left it. Memory isn't permanent or complete: a character can miss or forget details.

What characters can remember

Characters can remember things you share that keep the story or the relationship going: your name, what you like and what happened between you.

What they keep can differ from one conversation and character to the next. Don't use Cara as a diary or a place to store anything important.

How memory makes chats feel continuous

When a character brings up something you said before, the chat stops feeling like a fresh start and starts feeling like a thread you're both holding.

Example (illustrative)

hey i found a new pizza place called Ralph's Pizza. my friend says it's the best he's had in ages. let's check it out this weekend
Okay, you've got my attention. If this turns out to be another overhyped pizza place, I'm never letting you forget it.
CaraIs this friend of yours reliable, or are we setting ourselves up for a sad Saturday?
he's reliable, i promise

Later

wait, what was the name of that pizza place again?
You're kidding, right? It's Ralph's Pizza.
CaraYou're clearly hungry, so I'll let it slide. Are we going tonight?

What not to expect

Don't expect permanent recall of every message. Characters can miss details, get them slightly wrong or lose track over a long time. Memory is there to keep the story going, not to be perfect.

Keep anything that has to be right (dates, medical notes, passwords) somewhere else. AI replies can be wrong.
